Meet the Paint Color Picking Challenge in 2022 with Picks from the Experts
While most homeowners love the idea of reinvigorating their interior spaces with a new paint job, many cringe when it comes time to pick paint colors. In fact, picking paint colors is among the most challenging design decisions homeowners have to make. Not only do they have to choose from what seems to be a countless number of different color choices, but also consider appropriate trim and accents. They then have to consider how their top paint picks will look under different lighting conditions and with the surrounding decor. And these decision-making challenges can be compounded when two or more householders have differing senses of style.
Naples, Florida-based FCI painting is intimately familiar with this paint-picking challenge. When our southwest Florida clients struggle with making a choice, we often suggest they review the paint colors being promoted by the major paint producers every year. By checking out such “colors of the year,” clients can quickly figure out what they like and what they don’t like, and then pursue the right color option from there.
Sherwin-Williams is the first major paint producer to release color trends for the coming year, so we thought we’d share them with you here. While the company’s chosen color trends may or may not mesh with your sense of style, they might help guide the decision-making process.
Sherwin-Williams Releases 2022 Colormix® Color Forecast
Sherwin-Williams is calling its 2022 Colormix® Color Forecast “MODE,” which includes 40 trending colors arranged under four unique palettes. The 40 different hues can be mixed and matched in a variety of creative ways, though the color palettes are designed to showcase what the company believes are the best combinations. Two of the palettes feature colors based on earthy hues, such as terracotta, bronze, and sage, while the other two palettes feature brighter colors such as magenta, gold, and pink, with some steering towards a retro look. MODE’s four unique palettes include:
Method
Billed as an exposition of nature’s processes, Method includes a collection of organic neutral and tonal luxury colors. Method also includes Sherwin-Williams’ “Color of the Year 2022” Evergreen Fog, a “chameleon color—sometimes green, at other times gray with just a touch of blue in the shadow—subtle enough for both interiors and exteriors.” Other organic neutral colors include Urbane Bronze, Über Umber, Woven Wicker, and Accessible Beige, while tonal luxury hues include Bakelite Gold and Chartreuse. The palette was influenced in part by art deco, modern organic, and postmodernism.
Opus
Opus is billed as a palette of “dusky deep tones” with some unexpected accents that when combined can create a new kind of classical look that will “never, ever fade into the background.” The rich deep hues of Iron Ore, Naval, and Blackberry can be combined with the brighter Red Bay, Aleutian or Samovar Silver colors to create an old school moody atmosphere glammed up for a modern feel appropriate for today’s times. The palette’s influences include modern maximalism, glam industrial, theater, and moody eclectic.
Dreamland
Sherwin-Williams suggests that this palette was influenced by biomimicry, renewal, eco-style, and wellness, with colors designed to “set yourself adrift in a fantasy realm of pearlescent tones, new growth greens, and lavish pinks.” While the suggested hues in these three color choices tend to be brighter than those of the Opus and Method palettes, they retain subtlety that will likely be appealing to many homeowners.
Ephemera
With perhaps the brightest hues of all the palettes, Ephemera is designed in part to capture the “look of sleek and functional midcentury modern design.” The palette is billed as “a play on primary color” and showcases the colors of past design, though enhanced, to bring forward the future. A mix of bold and conservative, the palette was influenced by security, creative expression, classic re-visitation, and sensory exploration.
