2020 Color of the Year Nominees to Help Guide Your Interior Painting Project Color Choices
2019 is coming to a close, which means that it’s time to make predictions for what’s going to be hot in 2020! From politicians to sports heroes, and from technology trends to automobiles, and pretty much everything else, pundits will be making their picks as to which ones will be most popular with the public in the coming year.
Paint colors are no different, and designers, renovators, paint producers, and, yes, residential painters themselves, are starting to offer their predictions about which interior paint colors will be popular in 2020. We here at FCI Painting don’t necessarily predict which colors might be popular with our Naples, Florida-area residential clients, but always keep tabs on what might be hot because our customers often ask.
That’s likely because homeowners often struggle with picking interior paint colors. And why wouldn’t they, given that there is such an immense number of paint color choices to choose from? Just go into any paint store and check out the hundreds of paint colors you can view on palettes, fan decks, and visualizers. It’s enough to make your head spin!
Thus, a good means of narrowing the field of possible choices is to start with what the experts are promoting. You don’t have to pick an exact “2020 color of the year,” but by checking out the offerings you can quickly figure out what you like and what you don’t like, and pursue the right color for your interior paint job accordingly.
To help get you started, here are the “2020 Colors of the Year,” as being promoted by four major paint producers.
Sherwin-Williams—“Naval” SW 6244
Sherwin-Williams notes that its 2020 color of the year was chosen with an eye on accounting for expected color trends for the coming decade. While predicting that the “next decade in color is going to be bold,” Sherwin-Williams pushes Naval as being the “new, approachable neutral that goes with everything.” The company adds that its calm yet confident hue “merges the desire for rich, inspiring color with our yearning for relaxation and retreat.” As a bold hue to kick off the decade, Sherwin-Williams believe Naval will be part of a design movement away from “omnipresent neutrals,” and towards more personal color choices.
Benjamin Moore—“First Light” 2102-70
Benjamin Moore calls its color of the year the “backdrop for a bright new decade,” and suggests that the soft, rosy shade of pink offers a fresh palette and revitalized spirit. The company suggests that First Light is a perfect neutral shade that is subtle enough to be used on every wall in a living room or bedroom, and paired with bright white or beige décor. Along with its color of the year, Benjamin Moore is promoting its ten “harmonious hues” of its “Color Trends 2020 palette.”
Behr—“Back to Nature” S340-4
Referencing the coming decade and need to find vibrancy in life, Behr recommends this revitalizing and restorative green hue because of its connection with nature’s favorite color. The company is promoting it for both interior and exterior paint jobs, calling it a hue that engages the senses and “pairs well with other colors both inside and outside your home.”
PPG—“Chinese Porcelain” PPG1160-6
A blend of “cobalt and moody ink blue,” PPG believes that the color trend for 2020 needs to offer “escapism in today’s technologically driven society,” and “impart calmness and restful sleep.” The company believes its Chinese Porcelain paint is a rich and traditional hue that will help bring out other colors in a room. While PPG is apparently not promoting Chinese Porcelain as an exterior paint choice, it is on record for declaring “blue” the automotive paint choice of the year.
While none of these “colors of the year” may meet your unique sense of style, they do provide a good starting point from which to start your search for potential interior paint colors.
